The Importance of Being a Good Student, According to St. Josemaria

St. Josemaria offers a lot of insight on the importance of being a good student. Many of his words are outlined in his little book, The Way. Read on to find inspiration for growing in professionalism and study…

“An hour of study, for the modern apostle, is an hour of prayer.” The Way, 335

Maybe you’ve heard this famous quote from St. Josemaria about studying, but it’s always great to reflect on the importance of being a good student and how our students can improve in their studies!

“Study. Study in earnest. If you are to be salt and light, you need knowledge, ability. Or do you imagine that an idle and lazy life will entitle you to receive infused knowledge?” The Way, 340

St. Josemaria has always highlighted the importance of study, for students and professionals! In order for us to be strong participants in our communities, we need to take the time to absorb what we are learning and determine ways to see it as a value for society. Parents have the obligation to be knowledgeable in their fields of work whether that is in the workplace or the home. Children also have a call to do their best in their schoolwork and even during their play!

Add a supernatural motive to your ordinary work and you will have sanctified it.” The Way, 359

This “supernatural motive” is seeking to find God in the details of studying. By offering to Our Lord each hour of study, the organization of notes, the preparation for presentations, and studying for tests, students will see the significance of their work in light of their role in society.

Being a hard-working, thoughtful student is one way we can show our appreciation to God for the circumstances He has given us. Let’s encourage our students to continue giving their best in their studies!
