How to Make Mary the Queen of Your Home

On August 22, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Queenship of Mary. Here are 4 ways you can make Mary the Queen of your home and your family!

Pray the Rosary as a family.

What better way to invite Mary into your home than to recite her prayer. While getting the family together can often time feel like herding cats, maybe start with just making one night a week the night you say the rosary as a family. Give younger kids the responsibility of handing out Rosaries and older kids can lead decades. Introduce some friendly competition and see who can memorize the different Mysteries or the Litany of Loreto to make things fun!

Find a Favorite Image of Mary.

Our Lady has appeared in so many different countries and eras around the world and has been the subject of many artistic interpretations. Find a particular iteration of Mary (Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Lourdes, the Immaculate Conception, etc.) and put her in a prominent place in your home. Research her story and any miracles or saints who also had a devotion to this image of Our Lady. You can also make it a goal to have an image of Our Lady in every room of your house! Having her around is great in difficult moments as a reminder of what she would want us to do and act toward our families.

Say the Angelus.

This one might be tricky to get everyone to do but stopping in the middle of our days, wherever we might be to say the Angelus is a good practice. It’s a quick prayer that takes less than five minutes and its super easy to set an alarm on your phone to chime at noon. Life can be non stop and its easy to pulled in a million directions by people, work, our anxieties, our preoccupatinos. The Anglus is quick but powerful reminder that, just like Mary, we are called to give God our “Fiat” every day.

Celebrate Our Lady.

There are many feasts in the Catholic Church and they’re called ‘feasts’ for a reason! Along with your favorite image of Our Lady, find out when her feast is too and do something a little extra special that day. Whether it’s a special dessert or a fun dinner or placing flowers at an image of Mary in your home, celebrating Our Lady just like we would our own moms can cultivate a deeper sense of affection for her.

The Feast of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a wonderful reminder that Mary should reign as queen in our families and in our hearts. We hope you find one small way to make her Queen of your home!
